Kayao is a Peruvian Nikkei restaurant rooted in the vibrant spirit of Callao. The design draws from the port city’s rich cultural fabric—infused with vivid colors, urban art, and local textures that capture its raw, expressive, and lively character. We envisioned a space that feels both cozy and inspiring, reflecting the energy and creativity of Callao while offering an immersive dining experience.

The layout guides guests through dynamic, layered spaces, balancing intimate dining areas with open communal zones. Walls feature tactile finishes and carefully chosen materials that enhance texture and rhythm throughout the space. Subtle details and spatial composition create a harmonious flow that supports both comfort and engagement.

In collaboration with Colombian artist Dickson Zamora, a large mural of a seahorse was integrated into one of the walls, adding a playful and memorable focal point. The resulting atmosphere is lively yet welcoming, energetic yet approachable, offering diners an experience that is simultaneously sensory, cultural, and deeply connected to the spirit of Callao.
