MATILDA

Redefining the new Latin restaurant experience

Location: Chicago, United States

Year: 2025

Scope: Interior Design

Matilda draws inspiration from the raw landscapes of Baja California, where earth, light, and craftsmanship converge. We envisioned the space as something carved out of memory: warm, intimate, and organic, celebrating imperfection through textures that breathe, materials that speak before decoration, and a palette that feels quietly alive.

The restaurant unfolds as four interconnected “caves” that soften acoustics, filter light, and create intimate yet connected areas. Walls feature earthy, tactile textures, and the ceiling follows gentle, organic curves, resulting in a calm, fluid, and human-centered environment.

In collaboration with Colombian artist Dickson Zamora, subtle sculpted faces were integrated into the walls as quiet witnesses to Matilda’s story, representing the people who shaped her world and revealed or obscured by changing light. The space balances elegance with ease, handcrafted yet timeless, designed to evoke an emotional response before a visual one and offering an environment that feels natural, approachable, and memorable.
